A Favorite Road Trip in The Hill Country Per Billy Bob Gholson

San Antonio is part of the Texas Hill Country which is known for rolling hills, Cedar trees and natural attractions like Enchanted Rock. With a son in high school who can babysit his elementary school aged daughter, Billy Bob Gholson and his wife are going to enjoy a one night, weekend trip for just the two of them. It has been years since the couple has taken a trip together without the kids.

A favorite road trip for Gholson and his wife Jean is to drive first to Gruene for antique shopping. If the weather stays nice, they will tube along the Guadalupe River. Floating along and relaxing will be a much needed break from the hustle and grind of working in sales.

Next on the list is a stop in Fredericksburg for some German food and to listen to an Oompa band. They will time their trip to happen during the annual food and wine festival in that town so they will sip and stroll while browsing some more quaint antique shops. A visit to Fredericksburg is not complete without a stop into the National Museum of the Pacific War. Gholson is a history buff who used to be a tour guide at the Alamo. He loves military history and seeing pieces of the past displayed with the stories.

The couple will head down the road a bit to stay at their favorite bed and breakfast nestled in the hill country between Fredericksburg and Enchanted Rock. The trip will finish with a visit to Enchanted Rock. Although in their fifties, the Gholsons stay active and plan to hike to the top of giant pink granite rock.

The couple met in high school and both went to the University of Texas at Austin (UT). One of the reasons that they returned to San Antonio after college and stayed in the Hill Country is all the unique towns and fun parks, museums and Texas culture in the area.

One thing the couple plans to do with their kids is to make it all of the ten corn mazes in Texas. In Hondo, there is corn maze dedicated to HEB, a chain of grocery stores that supports local Texas farmers. A maze they visited before is in the shape of Texas located at Sweet Berry Farm in Marble Falls.

The hardest mazes are the ones in Lubbock and Midland. These panhandle cities are quite a drive from San Antonio.

Billy Bob Gholson puts in long hours working so he and his family can enjoy a full life. He has been saving for his kid’s college. Another trip in the near future will be taking his son Barry for a tour of UT.
